Our story – a little corner of history
At Bonfit, we’ve come a long way since we started out as Winick Furniture Fittings in 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II. It’s still our family’s firm with family values that remain true to this day – excellence, honesty and hard work.
The firm was founded by brothers Max and Jack Winick. Although based in only a small premises in Highbury, Islington, the business very successful at making fittings for reclining chairs and mechanisms for sofa beds. In 1969 Max’s 18-year old son, Sam Winick, joined and put in a 48-year shift to date.
Cornering the market.
In 1978 the business was dramatically boosted when we invented, designed and patented a corner castor for the furniture trade. This single product saved a considerable amount of time, effort and money – all adding helping customers’ bottom line.
Growth was rapid. Soon we made up to 200,000 corner castors a week. So in 1981 we moved to bigger premises in Leyton, East London and employed 6 people.
We also started designing new products including tube bending and welding. To reflect this change, the company was renamed as Leyton Tubes (incorporating Winick Furniture Fittings) – and Sam took over from Max who retired.
In 1987 Sam amalgamated the company with a large manufacturing firm in Bow, East London – and began trading as Leigh & Letcher. 50 employees made multiple components from car parts to wheel clamps and even satellite dish holders. But the cornerstone of the business was always the corner castor.
The birth of BonFit
In 2007 after a recession and strong price competition from the Far East, Leigh & Letcher ceased trading. Ever adaptable, full of fighting spirit and too young to retire, Sam Winick adopted a ‘can't beat them, join them’ attitude. He started importing from the Far East and selling to customers he’d served over the years – BonFit Furniture Fittings was born.
True to Winick traditions, BonFit continues to be a family business. Sam’s daughter Bonnie joined him to manage the admin. In 2016, Sam Winick’s grandson Charlie joined help run the day to day.
While we look to the future, we continue to be innovators, working with the furniture trade to create smart solutions to manufacturing problems.
While products come and go, the Corner Castor is still the company’s cornerstone. It’s evolved through a few variations – and we’ve produced over 200 million since we invented it in 1978 – and we are proud to say it's still manufactured in the UK.
